A Call from an International Company

Yesterday, I received a call from the Bhopal office of an international company. The gentleman proposed that my “forgotten” — that is, neglected and forsaken — humble clinic be registered under ISO 9001:2015, in accordance with international standards. He stated a fee of ₹7000 for three years and a renewal charge of ₹1200 after the completion of that period.

Questioning the Necessity of Registration

Since I was aware that this registration is not mandatory, I nevertheless asked him several questions for clarity. I directly inquired:

The Reality of International Standards

“According to international standards, what should be the ideal condition of a homeopathic doctor’s clinic? Kindly enlighten me so that I may rise to that prescribed level.” (I baited the hook with a touch of deliberate humility.)

He replied, “Our representative will visit and inspect the clinic.”

Inspection or Mere Formality?

I was astonished. Naturally, the foremost standard ought to be the doctor’s valid degree and official registration. He perhaps felt pleased with his cleverness, yet I knew he had already stepped into a labyrinth. I delivered the next googly:

“If, for any reason, my clinic does not match the required standards, will I then be denied ISO registration?”

A Guaranteed Certification?

He promptly responded, “No, no — you will certainly receive the registration. You only need to say yes now.”

A Certificate or a Commercial Transaction?

Hearing the impatience in his altered tone — the anxiety of losing a valuable client — I understood that the matter revolved purely around money, and he, in turn, realized that I had discerned his intent.

Thereafter, my subsequent questions had no effect upon him, just as striking a knife against a bear sunk in hibernation produces no visible response (believe me, my questions were by no means as tedious as Paresh Rawal’s character in the film “Judaai”).

The Limitations of ISO Certification

Thus, it appears evident that ISO 9000 and similar standards have, in many cases, been reduced merely to the conferring of a certificate or decorative badge.

Promotion and Intellectual Appeal

He admitted that if one were to promote the clinic on a national or international scale, the presence of the ISO seal might lead “intellectuals” to prefer seeking treatment there first.

Conclusion and Reflection

I am unaware of the extent of governmental involvement in such matters, yet I felt strongly that this experience deserved to be shared — and hence, I have shared it.
